A Historic Mayor

The new democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these services may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Challenges

The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has sought to smooth over these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as surprisingly friendly.

The Basic Tests of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing city upkeep: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and ensuring smooth subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with murders reported.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
