The Former President's Progressive Alarm Misses The Continent's Real Threat: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed assessment of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" agendas pose an existential threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument is based on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The actual challenge confronting Europe is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Gap Separating the US and Europe

The data reveal a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, compared to a mere 13.5% growth for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly half of the global top fifty technology firms are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Problem

The growing economic gap is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of global tech leadership is decidedly American. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at more than $10bn, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This disparity prompts a vital issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does the EU positioned? Most analysts agree it is largely a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several key reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a genuine unified investment market, a factor that caps the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder European business. A US startup can introduce a product under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a larger population size, is split among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these challenges, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to propose substantial change. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for major changes.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable much higher levels of commercial innovation.

The continent retains considerable strengths: high-quality workforce, excellent education systems, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing next-generation tech, it can still dramatically increase economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
